MARCON 44 was GREAT!

This year, MARCON 44 seemed to be a great success overall, but it was also a success for the Asgard.  We showed our spirit and our crew behind one of the best looking hall displays at the con!  A lot of folks stopped to look and take a brochure, AND we had several new recruits express interest in joining.  Lets see who shows up at the next meeting!  Also, our very own Cmdr. Kathy Knese won second prize in the Iron Costumer competition!  Go Kathy!  We sold a few Viking axes that were donated to the Asgard by Starbase Columbus and even saw them being used as props for some of the costumes at the masquerade ball.  We were challenged by the KAG group (when AREN’T we?), and some of us ended up in a video clip on their website!  See http://www.kag.org.

It was great meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends, but we put in a lot of hours together at the table, so the best thing about the weekend was getting to know each other better as crewmembers!

Bring on MARCON 45!

Details on the success of the Star Base Columbus Retro Science Fiction Festival

Click on the Holo Images tab in the menu bar above and select Retro SciFi Festival to see the pics.

Star Base Columbus hosted the Retro Science Fiction Festival on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 1:30pm to 8:00pm.  This food drive was part of Operation Feed, a central Ohio effort to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.  Donations of canned and boxed foods were accepted at Star Base Columbus, 5541 Westerville Road, Westerville, Ohio.  This was a RETRO sci-fi festival, so many folks came dressed as their favorite retro characters from the 1930's to the 1970's!  Prizes were awarded for the most creative costumes, and there was a very creative robot building contest!  The food drive collected 268 lbs of food (one pound = one meal), so we collected enough to feed a family of 4 for nearly 2 months!  This was a very successful drive and Captain Melinda Coates of Starbase received a very nice “Thank You” from the Mid Ohio Food Bank.  The day’s activities and donations raised an additional $125.00 for the food bank!  This was a great collaboration between Starbase Columbus,   local STARFLEET and independent sci-fi chapters, and many individual contributors.  GREAT JOB EVERYONE, and THANK YOU STARBASE COLUMBUS!

Hollywood Studio Theatres in Westerville, the Gateway Theater in Columbus, and several other theaters in the area hosted EARLY showings of the new STAR TREK MOVIE with the promotional assistance of central Ohio sci-fi and STARFLEET clubs:

Hollywood Studio Theatres in Westerville, the Gateway Theater in Columbus, and several other theaters in the area hosted early showings of the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie on Thursday, May 7th, 2009, a day before the official opening of the film at theaters across the nation.  At least three of the theaters had promotional assistance from central Ohio sci-fi and STARFLEET chapters.  Uniformed crew members from both the USS Asgard and the USS Maximillian revved up the crowds at the Gateway Theater at the 7pm, 9:40pm and 12:15am showings of the film.  The crews presented trivia questions at the two earlier showings with prizes for correct answers donated by Star Base Columbus and promotional items from the movie provided by the theater.  At the Hollywood Theater in Westerville, crew members from the USS Asgard, the USS Columbus and Starbase Columbus were present to promote the shows. This was another great example of collaboration in central Ohio, as three ships and a Starbase worked together to meet and greet potential new members of Star Trek fandom and welcome them into the fold!  We let the movie goers know that Star Trek is indeed alive and well in 2009!
